How to Wear a Suit and Still Look Cool

I have a love-hate relationship with suits: Love that they have the potential to make you look totally polished and chic; hate they have the potential to make you look totally corporate and boring.

However, lately I’ve been leaning more towards love than hate. Phillip Lim’s upcoming Target collection offers a pretty great navy and black version, and last night Alexa Chung turned up to Altuzarra’s MyTheresa.com launch party looking pretty darn cool in a Boy by Band of Outsiders one.

I know, I know; Alexa Chung looks amazing in pretty much anything. Truth. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few handy style tips we can glean from this look:

1. DO pick a suit with a modern cut: The blazer should be sharply tailored, while the trousers should be slim and hit just above the ankle. A flattering fit is the key to avoiding frumps-ville.

2. DO play up the masculinity of the suit by pairing it with a soft top. Chung’s silky ivory button-up is fashion-forward and feminine but not too fussy.

3. DO keep the accessories streamlined: Chung’s strappy sandals lighten the look while the sky blue clutch adds just the right touch of color. Anything heavier would drag the look down.
