Underwear Shopping of the Future: How Comfortable Are You Video Chatting About Undies With a Customer Service Rep?

There are two kinds of people in this world—OK, there are more, but for the sake of this story, I’m about to make some broad, sweeping generalizations—people who love the ritual, fun, and/or romance of shopping for underwear and lingerie, and people who don’t.

For the latter group, the folks who just want to stock up a couple of times a year with their favorite basics, e-commerce start-up MeUndies is heaven-sent—an online portal to great designer-quality undies and T-shirts at lower-than-designer prices. Think of it as a practical destination for your once-a-year undergarment shopping needs—like, literally, you can buy a 365-pack of panties from MeUndies, for real.

In its quest to disrupt the underwear retail system, MeUndies has tried lots of just-this-side-of-ordinary things—from advertising in untraditional locations to installing underwear vending machines in boutiques around the country.

Now the company is looking to take its online shopping experience to the next level—and you’ll never guess how.

MeUndies has launched a crowdfunding project to raise money for a live video-chat customer service initiative on its website. Yes. The company wants you to chat face-to-face with a customer service rep about your lingerie selection.

According to the fundraising page:

Now that we have succeeded in making the world’s most comfortable underwear, we want to raise the bar and create the most advanced online shopping experience the world has ever seen. With your help we can build the first-ever live video customer support technology that will bring the ever elusive in-store shopping experience to e-commerce! Customers like you will be able to chat with a live representative and get a feel for products like never before online.

Does this seem like it could be a slippery slope to you? Imagine the questions you could ask that a customer service rep will have to give you a straight-faced answer to! Like: Do these thongs make my butt look big?
