If when swimsuit shopping recently, you noticed your eye being drawn to a one-piece and thought “What is happening to me??”, you’re definitely not alone (Nikki’s on-board and rounded up 25 fabulous options last week!). After seasons of bikinis being de rigueur for 20- and 30-somethings, the more conservative one-piece is trending back!
The Wall Street Journal noticed the same trend, and I decided to turn to some retail experts for confirmation on my hunch that this summer is about to explode with one-piece sightings.
“The percentage of one-piece sales is growing year to year,” said Shopbop fashion director Elle Strauss. “Our fashion pieces, such as Zimmermann, Mikoh, and Mara Hoffman, do really well, as do our more streamlined pieces, like Solid & Striped, which is a new brand on site that’s doing especially well.”
If you’ve flipped through a J.Crew catalog recently, you know that it’s on board. “We love the idea of the classic fit in swim,” said Tom Mora, vice president of woman’s design at the brand. And there are ways to have a faux one-piece moment, too: “We’re especially excited about rashguards as women are gravitating toward a more covered-up look.” (Did thoughts of Blue Crush just pop to mind?)
“One pieces are having a major moment this year, and we think they’re definitely here to stay,” agreed Sophie Taub, head buyer at online swimsuit mecca LargoDrive.com. “There are so many brands that really focus on making them a priority through cutting edge [creation] and ultra-sexy details.” She’s not joking, either: I counted sexy cutouts and mesh inserts, crochet details, and working zippers when I glanced over the 70+ one-pieces on their site (though there’s plenty of demure cuts, too, if that’s what you’re after).
