If the idea of smart accessories has you wincing a little (because, you know, they’re typically not cute), I predict you’re about to be thrilled with the new discovery I just made. New York City-based Ringly opened up for pre-orders earlier this week, and basically, you might as well start pulling out your credit card—that’s how much you’ll want one.
I had a chance to play with one yesterday and was impressed with the feel and look of it, along with the capabilities. You set your preferences on the accompanying iPhone or Android app and are notified with a vibration and flashing light whenever you receive a text, call, or email from specific people. You can make it a broad group or small (i.e., only calls from your significant other and mom, plus emails from the boss).
Any of the apps on your phone that offer push notifications can also sync, so your personality proclivities can be taken care of. There’s the more regular (let me know when someone mentions me in a tweet) and the more unique (let me know when there are new items matching my eBay saved searches—or is that just me?).
Part of the backstory is the female founder catching flak from family for missing texts and calls, something I totally relate to since I like the freedom of leaving my phone in my bag and ignoring it for hours (though hate the guilt that comes from friends gently asking why I haven’t responded to them).
There are currently four semiprecious stones available, with more planned for the fall, and prices range from $145 to $180 (you can order here). Preorders placed now should be fulfilled by mid-to-late fall.
