While the term supermodel can be thrown about quite liberally these days (we might even be a little bit guilty of it sometimes too…ahem), labeling Joan Smalls with the superlative is legit. She’s graced the frenzy-inducing Victoria’s Secret show runway three times and counting, landed a top 10 spot on the Forbes Highest Paid Models list last year, and has the title of the first Latina face of Estée Lauder. Plus, she’s walked every high-fashion runway from Gucci to Chanel and appeared in designer campaigns from H&M to Versace. Never mind Joan’s flawless off-duty-model street style when she’s not strutting the runway, walking the red carpet, or posing for the cameras. So, with the aforementioned accolades in mind, we must crown Joan Smalls with the Glamour Style Icon of the Week award. Let’s take a look at her across-the-board top looks, and, let me say, it was really hard to choose.
Yes, this up-to-here and down-to-there Balmain resort 2012 dress might look familiar. Probably because fellow Victoria’s Secret model (and Glamour Style Icon) Alessandra Ambrosio wore it at a different VS event in 2011. And Zoe Saldana wore it at a movie premiere the same year. But Joan wore the dress FIRST—at a VS runway show after-party. So there.
Way ahead of the fashion game in 2012, she wore an easy but impossibly chic leather T-shirt and brocade shorts pairing at the In Vogue: The Editor’s Eye screening. I want to wear this look right now—in 2014.
As most high-fashion models do, Joan has an impeccable eye for shape and detail. At the 2013 MTV VMAs, she kicked up the little white dress look with a sculptural box pleated silhouette by Viktor & Rolf and dominatrix-level Casadei gladiator heels.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I love how Joan looked in this sheer-skirted floral Givenchy gown at the amfAR party at Cannes last year. Not the easiest look to pull off, but she did it flawlessly.
A Joan Smalls roundup would not be complete without one of her super chic, just running around Paris/New York/London outfits. During Milan Fashion Week, she layered a perforated leather tee over a camo button-down shirt and wore the pairing with distressed cutoff shorts. (I mean, with those legs…) A luxe skin zip clutch and dapper loafers finished off her impeccably effortless look. Need. This.
Kapow. The Prabal Gurung model and muse wore the designer’s asymmetrical layered and peplumed cocktail dress at the Vogue CFDA Finalists party last year.
At this year’s ball-gown-themed Met Gala, Joan just made the dress code in an embroidered drop-waist gown by Vera Wang. She broke the rules another way—with her daringly vibrant purple lips.
Now I’m just thinking that Joan should wear Prabal every day. She just looks drop-dead stunning in this drape-y cutout gown from the fall 2014 collection (and bangs!).
