Caggiano is on a major Lucania Apennines, bordering the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano.
Caggiano is a beautiful Roman-medieval village. The castle and fortifications date from the ninth or tenth century and were placed to protect the population. Of the four access ports exist along the walls, one of the entrance, called Porta del Ponte. Here we have discovered a very pearl: Locanda Severino.
Set in the historic centre of Caggino, Locanda Severino offers a Michelin-starred restaurant and spacious rooms with antique furnishings. The Locanda is in a picturesque village on a rocky spur, features old furniture and a traditional rural decor. Three years ago Vitantonio Lombardi, a chef from the near Savonia di Lucania, started to work here. His dishes are a perfect mix between the old traditional features of the cuisine from Southern Italy and modern presentation and techniques.
Locanda Severino gived us a chance to taste a flavor never tasted before. They base their flavors on traditional south Italian dishes and adding other Mediterranean flavors. Fusion food that shows off a high class of presentation of food. An ancient building, inside a modern flow of light ambiance that creates a relaxing place to wine and dine.
We started with three kinds of bread (dried tomatoes, with vegetable coal and a heart of ricotta and with herbs), the breadsticks and three kinds os delicious homemade oils.
The Wine: “Il Caggianese” 2009 [Sangiovese 50%, Aglianico 40%, Merlot 5% e Cabernet-Sauvignon 5%].
We finished with the gianduia mousse with salt and hazelnuts from Giffoni; the small assorted pastries offered by the chef.
The dessert also including local fruit lighter than the traditional versions.
