No doubt about it, heels are a definitely a key element of Kate Middleton’s wardrobe. The Duchess has kept things pretty simple for the most part, picking round-toe pairs in neutral colors (like those nude L.K. Bennetts) for formal engagements. Off-duty, she has worn boat shoes, but this is also a woman who’s played field hockey in heels. Still, what flats she does have in her rotation might need to be credited to designer Penelope Chilvers, who, per the Daily Mail, was the first to coax her into some nearly 10 years ago.
This snap of Kate from an event in 2005 shows her wearing what I believe are a pair of the designer’s tasseled riding boots (the same she’s saying made Kate a believer). Penelope’s pretty convincing about the chicness and practicality of flats too, and if she had some time to coach Kate, I don’t think those nude heels would stand a chance.
“You simply walk taller in flats. You feel comfortable in them, so you’re able to walk with more confidence, keeping your spine straight [and] giving you better posture,” she said. “Plus, they work for every occasion. I’m 5’2″ and I wear them everywhere, even to weddings.”
