3 Insanely Easy Styling Swaps to Try Right Now for Instant Cold-Weather Chicness

Confession: Fall is not my favorite fashion month. Yeah, yeah, I know what you’re thinking: “But you get to layer!” and “You get to wear coats!” Yep. And if you live in New York (my home now) or Wisconsin (where I grew up) or pretty much any state that isn’t California, Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, Louisiana, Georgia, or Texas, you get to be bundled up and wear a heavy coat for at least six months. Yay.

I know I’m stating the obvious here, but being swaddled in the same clothes for months (and months and months…) can get pretty boring. To shake things up, I’m on the lookout for tiny, easy tweaks I can make to my winter outfits that don’t cost a fortune. After all, I’m trying to save my money for multiple tropical escapes, y’all.

Here, three recent favorite tweaks I’ll be trying.

1. Swap your necklace for a sweater clip.
Snap on a bunch of sweater clips instead of your usual statement necklace.Yes, I said sweater clips. Sounds kind of old-fashioned, right? That’s precisely what I like about them. Such a chic throwback! Etsy has tons of affordable options. Plus, they’re functional: Think about how nonchalant you’ll look walking around with your cardi flapping all cape-like in the breeze and never slipping.

2. Swap your beanie for a beret.
I love a beanie as much as Nikki the next gal, but sometimes you just want something a little more sophisticated. And by sophisticated I mean French. Voila!

3. Swap your coat’s belt for a real belt.
I used to think this idea was a little silly…and then I tried it myself. Not only does it make even the cheapest coat look way more luxe, but it also makes your outerwear seem like part of your outfit. I like to play around with different styles—everything from braided skinny ones to thick leather corsets to fancy embellished ones look awesome.
