Even if you’re not a fan of One Direction, you’ve probably noticed just how on-point their fashion is. It’s all thanks to one woman, stylist Caroline Watson, who’s been with the guys since the beginning and works with them on everything clothing-related, whether it’s a big red carpet engagement or casual, off-duty stuff.
The original pitch she submitted to the boys’ team drew from that most exquisite of bands: the Spice Girls. “I had this idea that I wanted them to be like the male equivalent to the Spice Girls,” she told The Muse. “Being in a group but having an identity. Everyone wore different things, and no two girls looked the same. I wanted to create that with the boys.”
She’s preached evolution to the boys too, and it shows. “I said, ‘I want you guys to eventually become more like models and rock stars, as opposed to being that cheesy pop boy band.’ They’ve really trusted me, and it’s gone from the cargo pants to skinny, ripped jeans and longer hair, a bit of stubble, tight-fitting T-shirts. I wanted to evolve with them and for people to be thinking, Oh my God, these kids are cool.”
With success, tastes have changed (Harry’s really into Saint Laurent, natch), though the guys still don’t completely get Caroline’s role. “Sometimes the boys may not understand what I’m doing, but when they see it, or they see other people’s reactions in a magazines, or their mum calls them, they’re like ‘Wow, OK then.’ And there’s no jealousy or anything. They’re five individuals and each have an individual look.”
Because I know how devoted fans can be, I plucked out the choice parts about each boy’s individual style.
Louis “is very laid-back in his style, [and] he’s quite into vintage-looking stuff. What I love about him the most is he’s not afraid to turn it up for the red carpet.”
Zayn will “take the most risks, and he’ll definitely push it, but it works. He likes his Dr. Martens.”
Niall “is getting into boots now, so I’m happy. He’s getting older, and certain things he wants to be smarter about, [but it’s] still relaxed, not too over the top.”
Harry “will always be Harry, and he will always do his thing. He’s been undoing his buttons since the first single! He’s coming into his own now, but it’s always been like that. He’s just got a lot older and a lot hotter, I guess.”
Liam “was the boy next door. Now Liam’s transitioned and completely grown into this whole new, sexy guy. When I first started working with them, he wouldn’t want to wear any color, any patterns, or stripes. [Then] he came into his own, and I was like, ‘This boy has got some confidence! I can work with that!'”
