The Ideal Length and Cut for Your Spring Work Dress

When it comes to finding a perfect go-to dress that’ll work for meetings with your boss or a completely ordinary day at the office, we should all give a big thank-you to Spain’s Queen Letizia. She just wore the perfect style for a day at her version of work (attending official audiences at Zarzuela Palace in Madrid), and its perfection came down to three things.

1. The Length
Even as hemline trends come and go, the fashion world has never stopped maintaining that the most flattering length for all hits right under the knee. It helps elongate the line of your body, and the classy, classic look is always a yes for the office space.

2. The Lines
Vertical color-blocking is one of the easiest slimming tricks for any garment. It’s especially potent when done in contrasting shades like black and white and with lines that curve in where the body naturally would (Letizia’s dress dips in near her waist, following the lines of a woman’s body).

3. The Sleeves
Sorry, ladies, but protestations about humid summer weather don’t matter—according to the experts, covered shoulders are the way to go in a professional environment. “This is a business meeting, and the more skin you show, the more distracting it is,” author and workplace etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore told us. The curved lines of this style mimic an on-trend cape, which gives the Queen’s look a more stylish vibe than regular cap sleeves.
