KARU combines the best of Finland, The Netherlands and Sweden, in a sustainable and stylish way. Karu creates leather goods, designed to be functional using minimal design. The minimal approach leaves each product looking natural thus emphasising the beauty of the leather. The brand is inspired by the beautiful, tranquil Nordic nature, and stays true to Finnish design.
Karu was founded in 2014 by Daniela Backman, who is originally from Finland; the idea sparked when Daniela was in need of a new wallet.
“I didn’t have the money to buy exactly the kind of wallet I wanted. So rather than spend my money on something I don’t really like, I waited. Until one day, I came across a lovely little fabrics market in the city I study in, and now call my home. After spending a little while there I found the greatest thing of all! A stand full of leather hides and scraps.”
What makes Karu so special is the thought and attention to detail that goes into each piece; Karu proudly handcrafts everything in their studio – absolutely no machines. Their studio is based in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Measuring, Cutting, and Sewing are all done by hand, this ensures Karu can guarantee outstanding quality, stitch by stitch, time and time again.
Now here’s where Sweden comes in – Karu uses organic, vegetable tanned leather from Tärnsjö Graver; a Swedish tannery. This certified Eco-tannery is among the remaining 5% of tanning houses worldwide who still employ the tradition of vegetable tanning, in favour of the more time and cost-efficient chrome excel method. They have chosen to respect the environment with their business practices using bark extracts, water and water-based finishing.
All Karu designs are inspired by the minimal aesthetics of Nordic fashion and architecture; clean, straight lines dominate their classic envelope designs.
“We like to keep them as and functional as possible. A stitch line should hold something together, and a pocket should be able to store something. We don’t believe in added details that do not add a function.”
