This fall I’m really feeling fringe, explaining why CH Carolina Herrera’s new Sofia bag caught my eye immediately. It’s the sort of small cross-body style I always need more of in my closet and has hippie vibe I’m after without being overwhelming (and “makes any outfit look effortlessly chic,” per Mrs. H herself).
Plus, when it’s coming from the design studio of one of the chicest modern-day fashion icons we have, you’re pretty much required to pay attention—and ask her questions about her personal purse collection when given the opportunity.
So, what did I learn from the amazing Mrs. Herrera?
There’s one beauty staple every lady should have in her bag.
“What you carry in your bag is very personal, but I think a woman should always carry her favorite lipstick to brighten up her look.”
Nostalgia + handbags = fabulous.
“I’ve had some of my handbags for many years and some are from my mother. I think sometimes you associate the handbag you wore with a magnificent evening or a special event in your life.”
When in doubt, go for the print or bright color.
“I think handbags, like fashion, should be fun!”
Don’t use a bag as a security blanket.
“There’s nothing surprising in my bag, but during the day I always carry my agenda, my wallet, a handkerchief, and lipstick. During the evening, I only carry my lipstick and handkerchief. I have a confession too. Sometimes I don’t carry a handbag in the evening because I make all of my dresses with pockets!”
My mind is feeling mildly blown by that last nugget. I usually feel like I have to carry a bag for evening-out situations (or something super formal, like a wedding), even though I could easily keep the pared-down essentials in a pocket.
