Zoe Saldana, Gwen Stefani, and Amy Adams have superstar style, and while each is celebrated for her individuality and uniqueness, they share a secret weapon when it comes to red carpet dressing: stylist Petra Flannery. Normally behind the scenes, Flannery is currently taking her own turn in the spotlight, landing atop The Hollywood Reporter’s 2015 list of 25 Most Powerful Stylists, which also includes Brandon Maxwell (the mastermind behind Lady Gaga’s plunging deep-V silver Grammys ensemble), Leslie Fremar (think Julianne Moore in custom Givenchy ombre crystals at the Globes), and Elizabeth Stewart (who paired Cate Blanchett’s Maison Margiela by John Galliano with a statement Tiffany & Co. turquoise necklace at the Oscars).
At the recent lunch sponsored by Jimmy Choo in their honor, Flannery and her colleagues responsible for the best red carpet looks in the industry let us in on their tricks of the trade:
“Own the look, and be confident,” advises Flannery, who was responsible for Stefani’s trendsetting wardrobe on the Voice and Emma Stone’s daring jumpsuit at the Golden Globes.
“Have fun and smile!” says Micaela Erlanger, who counts Olivia Munn, Lupita Nyong’o, and Jared Leto as clients.
“Always have the best tailor,” recommends Ilaria Urbinati, who nabbed the fifth spot on the list and celebrated by taking selfies with her friend and client Elizabeth Chambers at the lunch at Soho House West Hollywood.
“Push boundaries. Pick a trend you might be a little bit afraid of, and just try it!” encourages Tara Swennen, who strives to push clients like Gone Girl’s Emily Ratajkowski and Odeya Rush into “uncharted territory.”
