The house of Chanel has many great lovers and friends—Gisele Bündchen, Kristen Stewart, and Vanessa Paradis have all lent their image to the label before. So has Lily Allen (she posed with the lightweight cocoon bags years ago), and the relationship seems like it’s still going strong, with her wearing a Chanel creation to this weekend’s Rose Ball in Monaco.
We knew it’d be different—Karl Lagerfeld hinted to WWD that it was “a very funny outfit.” He designed the oversized collar, coat, and silver dress she wore underneath, according to the Telegraph.
I’m not positive if I’ll be adding an oversized floral piece to my own closet anytime soon, but I love this entire thing for so many reasons. It’s easy to think of the brand for its posh and polished jackets and handbags, but there’s an irreverent strain running through its DNA proudly and loudly. Karl Lagerfeld has made it somewhat of a thing to stage fashion shows in quirky cool venues, recently reimagining a brasserie and supermarket. The brand has collaborated with Pharrell, showed Princess Leia-type earmuffs, and didn’t seem to be bothered by this artist’s awesome Chanel bagel purse. Fashion is definitely a serious business, but there’s also a lot of opportunity for fun. Karl and Chanel know that and embrace it, associating themselves with of-the-moment names (Kendall Jenner included!) and always pushing the envelope.
